A Case of von Recklinghausen`s Disease Associated with a Vertebral Artery Aneurysm

Abstract
|
|
|
This report is to present a rare case of von Recklinghausen´s disease associated with a vertebral artery aneurysm, presumably one from of vascular neurofibromatosis, which had resulted in quadriplegia. A 26-year old female had suffered from the progressive development of quadriplegia and respiratory difficulty for 5 months prior to admission.
Physical examination revealed multiple cafe-au-lait spots, numerous cutaneous or subcutaneous nodules and rather flaccid arms with moderately spastic legs. No movement of diaphragm and other accessory muscles on respiration was visible. Biopsy of cutaneous nodule reported a neurofibroma. Myelogram showed a complete block of opaque column at the level of the fifth cervical vertebra with two medial indentations on the right side. Laminectomy was carried out from the fourth cervical vertebra to the first thoracic, and demonstrated a large vertebral artery aneurysm with cord compression at the level of the fourth and fifth cervical vertebra.
